The Marian Thomas Memorial Writing Competition was established in memory of Marian Thomas, a 2001 Waverly High School graduate, who passed away unexpectedly in May, 2009. She was active in drama and music, wrote for the school newspaper and served as editor of the high school literary magazine. Marian graduated in 2006 from Oberlin College with a B.A. degree in Creative Writing. A beautiful soul loved by many, she enjoyed sharing and inspiring others with her poetry, short stories and jam sessions. To pay tribute to her artistic temperament and accomplishments, this fund was established in her memory to encourage young people with an interest and ability in creative writing to pursue and develop their talent, and to follow their muse.
