Born April 29, 1919 in Delaware, Ohio, long-time banker Robert Moore died at the age of 78 on September 1, 1997. Moore resided in Portsmouth almost all his life and graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1937.
“He brought my mom back to his hometown after they married and WW II,” said the Moore’s daughter Rebecca Wagner. “They both loved it here and wanted to give back to the community that was so much a part of our lives.”
Robert Moore attended The Ohio State University from 1938 to 1941 when he entered the United States Air Force and became a pilot in WW II.
“Dad’s love for the university lasted until his death in 1997,” Wagner continued. “After the war he attended almost every OSU home football game wearing his scarlet and grey; so did my mom although she was from the Carolinas. He served on numerous boards with the alumni association in Columbus and was president of the Scioto County OSU Alumni Association. My brother Rick attended OSU before graduating from Ohio University and I graduated from OSU. Brother Bobby attended The Citadel.”
“My dad loved OSU and was a member of the President’s Club for many years. He bled scarlet and grey. Their house in Sunset Beach, North Carolina was grey with a red door!” Wagner said. “He worked his way through OSU so it was his wish to be able to help someone from Scioto County who needed financial help to attend his alma mater.”
Both Moores were long-time members of All Saints Episcopal Church. Robert was a member since birth along with his parents and grandparents. All three of their children also attended church there when they were growing up, according to Wagner.
Moore started his banking career with First Federal Savings and Loan Association in 1951 and rose through the ranks until he was appointed chairman of the board in 1984. In 1995 he was given the distinguished title of Director Emeritus of Charter One Financial Inc. and its subsidiary Charter One Bank FSB following his retirement from the Charter One Board of Directors.
Margaret Moore died on December 25, 2010 at the age of 89. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, she was married to Robert for 56 years. In her early years, Margaret was a stewardess for Delta Air Lines before becoming a housewife, mother and grandmother. She was a docent at the Southern Ohio Museum, which will also benefit from a sizable bequest in her name, and a member of various social organizations.
In addition to their three children, the Moores had six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
