Jim and Clara Donaldson Memorial Scholarship More Information Up Arrow

Scholarship Description:
  • Pursuing a degree in a health-related field (excludes nursing unless the student is employed in the food service or house cleaning department)
  • SOMC employee
The Scioto Foundation has announced the establishment of the Jim and Clara Donaldson Family Scholarship Fund, created in memory of their parents by Linda Donaldson and Charles (Chuck) Donaldson.

To be eligible for the Donaldson Family Scholarship, a student must be an employee of the Southern Ohio Medical Center from any department. Eligible candidates must have a desire to further their education in a health-related field excluding nursing. A committee composed of representatives of SOMC and Linda Donaldson will make annual selections.

The Donaldson siblings chose students with interests in health-related careers as beneficiaries of the new scholarship primarily because their mother Clara logged thousands of hours as a volunteer for the Southern Ohio Medical Center, according to Linda.  After Jim retired from his career as an architect, Clara persuaded her husband to join her as a volunteer.

“When I was in the hospital recuperating from kidney stone surgery, I remember hearing staff members complaining about the lack of scholarship funding for students other than those in the nursing field,” said Linda. “Mary Arnzen had told me the SOMC Development Department had set up scholarships to help nursing students, so we decided to provide help for others.”

Linda Donaldson is the owner of Copies Galore, a printing and copying business in downtown Portsmouth.  Active in community organizations, she is a member of Main Street Portsmouth, the Portsmouth Wind Symphony and the Cornerstone United Methodist Church choir and handbell ensemble.

Her brother Charles resides in Clay City, Kentucky. He is retired from careers as a coal mine reclamation inspector and a water quality control inspector.  He has also helped with the 4-H programs in Powell County.

James (Jim) Donaldson, son of Charles Morgan and Marcia Storck Donaldson, was born on May 12, 1920 in Portsmouth. He died on August 22, 2013, at Hill View Retirement Center at the age of 93.

After completing  his degree in Architecture at The Ohio State University, Jim lived in Washington, D.C. where he served as a civilian in the US Navy Bureau of Ships as a naval architect until the end of WW II.  While there he returned home one weekend to marry Clara Frances Elkins, who was to be his wife for 59 years.

After the war Jim joined his father’s architectural firm of Devoss and Donaldson, which eventually became Donaldson, Donaldson and Wittenmeyer with addition of his fraternity brother, Jim Wittenmeyer.  James worked at the local firm until he retired in 1971.
He was fascinated by buildings of all shapes, sizes and ages, his children recall. He was also a believer in historic preservation.

Often Jim would be recognized riding his bicycle around Portsmouth. He enjoyed proclaiming himself the original TOSRV rider when, in 1939, he borrowed a balloon-wheeled bicycle to ride from OSU to Portsmouth and back, to attend a dance with his future bride, according to family members.

In retirement, Jim pursued his many favorite activities, including traveling, boating, hiking, backpacking, canoeing and kayaking, as well as musical outlets such as playing his clarinet in the Portsmouth Wind Symphony and singing in the Chancel Choir of Cornerstone United Methodist Church. He served in many offices at church and participated in numerous Boy Scout and Nature Club activities. He was also a Trustee for the 1810 House, a board member of Goodwill Industries and a member of the Camp Oyo Alumni Association.

Born on July 15, 1921, the daughter of Albert and Katherine Elkins, Clara Frances Donaldson was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and Portsmouth Interstate Business College.  After college, she became secretary of First Christian Church and later, a bookkeeper for First National Bank until she married James in 1943.

Clara was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and its successors for more than 60 years, singing in the choir, participating in the Builders Class and coordinating programs for the senior church members’ organization. She held many offices in United Methodist Women and served as president of the Portsmouth unit of Church Women United, taking active roles in that organization’s special projects.

She was a member of Scioto Memorial Hospital Guild for many years and, as one of the most experienced leaders in Cub Scouting, served nine years as a den mother.  Clara died on December 4, 2002 at Hill View Healthcare.

In addition to Linda and Charles, the Donaldsons were the parents of three other children, Jamie, David and Ann, and had one granddaughter, a step-grandson and a great-granddaughter.
