PHS Class of 1961 Scholarship Fund

The Scioto Foundation has announced the creation of a new scholarship fund established by the Portsmouth High School Class of 1961.

Local realtor Neal Hatcher proposed the idea for the new fund to commemorate the Class of 1961’s 50thanniversary during planning for the alumnae group’s reunion.  Assisted by his wife Vicky and 1961 fellow classmate Dr. James Nagle, Hatcher obtained approval for the new scholarship from those attending the reunion last September.

Criteria for the scholarship were also set by members of the class of 1961 who decided that it should be available to students with average grades needing financial assistance to continue their education and not necessarily be based on solely on students’ GPAs.  Applicants must be a graduating senior at Portsmouth High School, have a minimum GPA of 2.5 based on a 4.0 grading system, and be enrolled in a four-year college or university.

In addition, applicants must write a 250 word essay explaining their life goals and what this scholarship would mean to them.

The Scioto Foundation volunteer scholarship committee will make the annual scholarship selections.  Amounts available for distribution will be based upon the current spending policy of the Foundation or will be the net income when not otherwise provided in the Foundation’s then current spending policy.

The Class of 1961 Scholarship Fund is thought to be the first one developed by an alumnae group of Portsmouth High School, according to Neal Hatcher, who hopes more classes will do the same.

A portion of extra revenue received for the reunion reservation fees was donated to the new fund and several 1961 classmates have made contributions.  The 1961 alumnae who created the fund plan to reach out to other members of the class with a direct mailing in the near future.

Scholarship Criteria:

  • Graduating senior at Portsmouth High School, Scioto County, Ohio

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5/4.0

  • Enrolled in a 4 year university or college

  • Applicants must write a 250 word essay explaining their life goals and what this scholarship would mean to them.
