The Scioto Foundation is pleased to announce the creation of the William C. Anderson Eagle Scout Scholarship Fund. The new fund has been established by Evelyn E. Anderson and her children in memory of her husband who died December 10, 2008.

Anderson was born on September 25, 1922, in Portsmouth; he and his wife were married for 61 years and resided here throughout their marriage. The couple have three children, Martha Miker of Cincinnati; James Anderson of  Austin, Texas, and Elizabeth Hallam of Okemos, Michigan. They also have seven grandchildren and one great-grand daughter.

“Dad loved scouting! It was in his crinkly eyes as he spoke of Camp OYO fun; in his reverent voice about Monty Montgomery, his troop leader, and in his heart as he earned his Eagle Award and as his troop patrolled the flood wall serving Portsmouth during the “37 flood,” said daughter Martha as spokesperson for the family.

“He lived the Scout Oath throughout his life, becoming a leader in business at Rotary and at Cornerstone United Methodist Church. We Andersons would like to honor his joyful Scout memories through this scholarship to a deserving Boy Scout of Troop #12 who will create his own rich-filled legacy,” added Martha.

A well-known businessman in the community, Anderson was a Chartered Life Underwriter, a designation awarded after eight college-level insurance courses. He was manager of Equitable Life of Iowa, now ING, from 1960 until 1988 and then continued as Agent Emeritus until 2008.

Anderson was a life-long member of Trinity Methodist Church, now Cornerstone United Methodist.

In addition to being an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, Anderson was a fraternity member of Phi Gamma Delta at Ohio Wesleyan University and a pilot in the Army Air Corps.  He was also a member and past president of the Portsmouth Rotary Club.

To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must have obtained the level of Eagle Scout. Preference will be given to Eagle Scouts that are members of Troop #12 and are members of Cornerstone Methodist Church.  The annual amount of the scholarship will be a minimum of $250.

The amounts available for distribution for the scholarship will be based upon the then-current spending policy of the Scioto Foundation, or will be the net income when not otherwise provided in the Foundation’s then-current spending policy.
