The son of Dr. Jim and Lizzie G. Wittenmyer, John Wittenmyer was born on March 30, 1892, and grew up in Peebles where his family owned farmland. He graduated from Miami University of Ohio and became an attorney in his hometown. His wife Kathleen, daughter of A.D. and Minnie W. Kirk, was born on February 1896, at Cherry Fork, Ohio. She grew up in Winchester and attended what was then called Miami University Normal School where she studied to be a teacher.

Living in West Union, the couple raised two children who attended school there. An architect, Jim and partner Earl Hayes established their own firm in Portsmouth. A younger daughter Joan taught art in the Dayton School System.

Luella Wittenmyer remembers that the couple loved to play in a card club. In addition to teaching school, Kathleen was a Sunday school teacher and a member of a Shakespeare Club. John always worked at the county fair each summer because he loved farming and working with farmers. When he retired, they returned to the farm where they stayed until the federal government took their land for the installation of power lines. Then they moved to the town of Peebles. John Died on September 24, 1976 and Kathleen died on March 4, 1978.

“I chose to have this Adams County scholarship because of my own nurturing, as well as my husband’s, by family neighbors and friends in a county I love, known for its preservation of nature,” said Lu.

Luella Wittenmyer and sister also created the Cecil and Ocie Trefz Scholarship Fund in 2003 in memory of their parents. She recalls the impact on her when the initial scholarship winner told her that she was the first one in her family to graduate from high school.

“It is always a good feeling to meet with the young people who receive the scholarships each year,” said Luella who has been faithful in her attendance a the Scioto Foundation’s annual scholarship luncheon.
