Johnson Scholarship Fund
Pursuit of education has always been something James and Gwendolin Johnson of Lucasville encouraged in their children. They were tenant farmers; and worked long, hard hours to provide their children with a chance to achieve their dreams. Their oldest (James Daniel) earned a doctorate in physics and just recently retired from the Los Alamos Laboratories in New Mexico where he did research for organizations such as NASA and the Department of Energy. Their second child (George Leroy) earned multiple baccalaureates and a Masters in business. George and his family have lived in England for over a decade, where he works as a consultant in international business. Their daughter (Janice Elaine) earned multiple degrees and is part of the business faculty at Shawnee State University.
And the academic pursuit does not stop with just the children of James and Gwendolin. Both daughters-in-law, all of their grandsons, and the wife of their oldest grandson have all followed the university path. Their youngest grandson recently earned his law degree in England. Their granddaughter is in high school in England and a little unsure what she will choose once she graduates. And it is a bit early to predict what their oldest son’s one year old granddaughter will do. But higher education is a strong probability in her future.
The Johnson Scholarship Fund was established for a number of reasons. It is in part a memorial to James and Gwendolin Johnson. It was created before they have passed on, so that they can aide in its design and implementation. The Johnson Scholarship fund is also a vehicle for the children of James and Gwendolin to pass on their parents’ value of education as well as ‘pay back” the assistance they obtained from various scholarships that aided in their endeavors. Because of this, the Johnson Scholarship does not limit the field of study, since the degrees within the Johnson family range from science to business to law to education to psychology to music. Finally, the fund is a way for friends and family alike to honor James and Gwendolin and their family.
