The Scioto Foundation announces a new Acorn Scholarship Fund established in memory of Richard Wolbert by his co-workers at Sunoco Chemicals Research and Technology in Haverhill, Ohio. A resident of South Shore, Kentucky, Wolbert was the Human Resources Director at the Haverhill Sunoco plant.  He died suddenly of heart failure on June 10, 2008 at the age of 57.

“Richard understood the value of an education,” said his wife, Denise Wolbert. “To him, it made people become valued and productive members of society.”

To be considered for the Wolbert Scholarship, applicants must be graduating senior at the Scioto County Career and Technical Center. Applicants must also show evidence of community service and compose an essay of 500 words or less on the topic “What Education Means to Me.”

A former resident of Imperial, Pennsylvania, Wolbert was born in Sewickly, PA, the son of Laura Drugmand Wolbert and the late William Wolbert. Mrs. Wolbert is a native of Pittsburgh. She is a registered nurse and is employed at the Scioto County Career and Technical Center.

The Wolberts have two grown children, a son, William Adam Wolbert who lives in Imperial, PA and a daughter, Jessica Elizabeth Wolbert, in Tampa, Florida.

The Scioto Foundation’s Acorn Fund process offers a simple and efficient way to build an endowment fund over time through installments. An Acorn Fund can be used to create an unrestricted, designated, scholarship, organizational endowment, donor advised or field of interest fund.

To set up an Acorn Fund, a donor works with the Scioto Foundation staff to select a name and commits to making minimum yearly contributions of $1,000. The donor can add to the fund at any time during the calendar year; contributions may be made by donors, relatives or friends. Once the goal of $1,000 is reached, distributions from the fund can begin.

The Scioto Foundation invests the funds and all earnings, including interest and dividends, back into the Fund, and the SF waives its minimum monthly fee until the $10,000 goal is reached.
