1] Who should apply?
- Students who need money for college.
- Students who have graduated from a UCAN high school or other area high school.
- Students who are residents of Scioto or another neighboring County. (Scioto, Adams, Pike, Jackson, or Lawrence counties in Ohio and Greenup or Lewis counties in Kentucky)
- Those who are planning on attending a college, university, or technical program.
2] Does it cost anything to apply for your scholarships?
3] How much of a scholarship might I receive?
- Scholarship awards from the Scioto Foundation range from $250 to thousands of dollars.
- Your potential award will depend on the size of the particular fund from which your scholarship was allocated.
4] May I receive awards from more than one scholarship fund?
5] Do I need to pay my scholarship money back?
- No. Scholarships are charitable awards that do not need to be paid back.
6] What expenses can I use scholarship award funds?
- Scholarships may only be used for direct educational expenses: tuition, books and fees.
7] Where can I go to school with these scholarships?
- Accredited institutions of higher learning (College, University, Trade, or Technical Schools)
8] Are the scholarship awards sufficient to pay the cost of my college education?
- Our scholarships are intended to provide partial support.
- Students are encouraged to look into other financial aid resources such as federal grants, loans and work-study awards.
- A complete financial package will be prepared by your school's financial aid office
9] How long is my scholarship good for?
- The student has one year to use the money for tuition, books and fees.
- If the student does not use the scholarship within the school year, they will forfeit their scholarship.
9] Can I forward my scholarship to a future year?
No.
10] Can an awarded scholarship be revoked?
Yes. A scholarship may be withdrawn or reassigned if a student no longer meets the eligibility requirements. In such cases, the funds may be retained by the Foundation or awarded to another highly qualified applicant.
- Circumstances that may affect eligibility include, but are not limited to:
- The student does not graduate from high school.
- The student does not enroll in a post-secondary (higher education) institution.
- The student changes their institution of attendance when the scholarship was designated for a specific school.
- The student changes their major when the scholarship was designated for a specific field of study.
- The student no longer demonstrates financial need (for example, the student has a credit balance or no remaining charges on their student account).
11] How will I find out if I receive a scholarship?
- You will receive email notification alerting you that you received a scholarship and referring you to login to the scholarship manager to accept of decline the award.
- You will also receive a scholarship packet in the mail, mailed to the address listed in your scholarship application.
- Some high school seniors will be notified and celebrated at their high school graduation.
12] How many essays will I have to write?
- Every application requires a minimum of 3 essays. (personal statement, short term goals, long term goals)
- There are supplemental donor specific essays that you will be prompted to respond to if you meet the qualifications. Each essay prompt you see is attached to a unique and separate scholarship.
13] How does a student attach their letters of recommendation?
- Students cannot upload letters of recommendation for themselves.
- On page 5 of the application, you will see prompts to give contact information of your recommenders.
- Once you hit enter on each of the recommenders, it will send an email to them.
- They will follow the link provided to complete a form.
- There will be a PIN to match your application to your recommender’s information.
- Within their form, there is a place where they can upload a traditional letter of recommendation, if they choose to do so.
- The student can log on to your application and see the status of their letters of recommendation. (pending, completed, or withdrawn).
- The student will receive an email if the recommender chooses to complete or withdraw their recommendation.
Note that, just because you asked the individual to complete a reference, does not mean they will. Be selective and find someone who is willing to complete the task before the deadline. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure all the tasks are completed.
14] How do I upload a file to the scholarship website?
Students: SAR report, transcripts, and photo.
Recommenders have a space to attach an optional traditional letter of recommendation.

- Maximum file size of 25MB
